About Yuantian (Kim) Ding

"In my daily life I don’t express myself a lot, but I feel like I can express myself more freely through music."

-Yuantian (Kim) Ding

Music has helped me express myself fully, and I know a career in music will make me feel complete. In my daily life I don’t express myself a lot, but I feel like I can express myself more freely through music. So, I'm pursuing my Bachelor’s degree of Music, double majoring in voice performance and contemporary writing & production (CWP) at Berklee College of Music.

My favorite part of being a musician is creating songs. I enjoy the process of writing songs and like connecting with listeners. I like to leave myself such quiet time and space, no phone call, text message, email interruption, only myself, I can hear my inner voice, I can talk to myself, I can capture the most subtle mood changes. Especially when I close my eyes, I can see it better. Different melodies, rhythms and chords have their own color, to listen, to feel, to touch and to express, just like painting, and that pen is the voice in my heart. They have strict logic and rules, but also are free, natural and subjective, to some extent, music is the most inclusive language. It breaks through time and space, but also connects people of different nationalities, races, identities, genders. My music is my language. It expresses my feelings and records my view of the world. Also, I write songs for other people and I put myself in their position. From their perspectives, I can show my empathy and write maybe more meaningful songs. Making deeper connection and share the same feeling with people from all over the world with different cultures and backgrounds motivates me to be a professional musician.

I think everything I have experienced influenced my musical development. I feel like my first original song is more like a gift. I still remember when I started strumming my guitar to write her song, the melody just came out naturally. I feel freer singing, like I found my voice. So, I will cherish and use this gift, spend my lifetime playing and creating highly emotional music, and sharing the touching stories through powerful ballads. As an Asian woman and member of a sexual minority community, I will use my music as a voice to send a message of love and inclusion to the world and to encourage more people to be brave with who they are.
